When I grow up...

I want to be a neurosurgeon.

You need to know that I never had the greatest luck when it came to getting the good science teachers, but I do believe there is one good thing that came out of all my years in science. When I took anatomy, a book called Gifted Hands was on our supplies list. We never read it. But for some reason I decided I'd read it on my own and ever since I've been fascinated and oddly excited at the idea of neurosurgery. Gifted Hands was written by M.D. Benjamin Carson and tells his inspirational story of how became such a gifted surgeon. He is the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and is famous for preforming the first successful hemispherectomy, in which he removed half of a girl's brain (who had suffered from seizures) and she survived. Basically...I'm just so intrigued and inspired by that! I want to meet him one day. And then who knows...maybe one day I'll be a neurosurgeon too.

repurposed book

my drawing class is doing the coolest thing for our sketchbooks this semester!!!! we each bought a really old book and we're going to gesso pages to draw on or make collages. here is the first page i've done!

Rococo

i have an obsession with old french furniture. i found this french rococo chair while i was looking for a rococo style painting to put in my art history study slideshow. and if you're reading this and you live in birmingham, there is an exhibit at the birmingham museum of art right now that has tons, TONS, of old european paintings, furniture, ceramics, etc. i went over christmas break with my dad and i was in awe. i love the detail and elegant style of all of it. it all makes me want to go live at versailles (you know, because i'm obsessed with fountains too). and i know...i don't like the ugly green background for this either, but just ignore that and look at the chair:)

Grand Central Station

today i wish i were in new york. i would just hop on a train and see where it would take me. in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of grand central station, i feel like there's a certain rest peacefulness to the steady motion of trains.

foreign art

today i found all this foreign money while i was cleaning out my desk. some of these are from places i've been and some of the currency came from places my dad has been. i didn't want to just get rid of them and i've had this frame that i've been trying to figure out what to do with it, so i decided to get creative.
